Welcome to the future…

WelcomeToFutureImagine someone saying this to you. “From the second half of this year to the first half of next year, you will meet a female who is your lucky star. Later next year you will have another lucky star, this time a male. Your luck will change in summer 2014, but as soon as 2013 arrives, your career will be picking up. You will have further chance to shine in 2013… At the moment you are not doing so well, but you should take care of your relationship with that important male in your life, particularly watching out for his health. You will be doing well in 2014, but after 2016 or 2017, the money will be rolling in even if you are just lying on the bed. Obviously you will need to make some changes to your life in order to have that success in 2016 or 2017.”

Will you believe in this person?

Is it a good thing to see the future? What if you can see it and then change it in whatever way you want? What, then, if you can see it but cannot change it at all?

This reminds me of Jack Du Brul’s Pandora’s Curse (2001), in which the protagonist Dr Philip Mercer, a successful mining engineer and geologist, remarks on the legendary Pandora’s Box. Everybody knows that Pandora opened the box out of curiosity, therefore letting out all kinds of evil and disease upon humanity. She was able to shut the box properly and keep Hope inside, which is why people always remain hopeful no matter how tough life becomes.

But Dr Mercer asks, “Has anybody ever wondered why Hope was in Pandora’s Box in the first place?”

So if you happen to have a chance to see the future, or simply to have a glimpse at it, think twice before you say “yes”.
