To Judge or Not to Judge (“Warm Winter Read” Day 9)

Reviewed The Wild Robot and continued reading Into the Mountains and Wild Dark Shore.

But more importantly, here is passing on the “call for judges” message from the organisers of the Aurealis Awards for Excellence in Speculative Fiction. All details are found via this link:

Having volunteered as a judge for the Aurealis Awards since 2017, mainly in the horror and science fiction panels, I can testify that it is a highly rewarding position. Yes, there is A LOT of hard work, tons of reading to do and almost all of it is in digital form. But, equally, there is A LOT of privilege and pleasure, as you get to read many great, published authors and their literary adventures into the curious and courageous unknown.

Even better, as a judge for the Aureaslis Awards, you get to connect and converse with like-minded people, discussing and debating the literary merits of each submitted work, and eventually voting (and fighting!) for the best. I find this part of the judging process particularly illuminating, communicating with and learning from the others, which benefits so much in my examination of the strengths and weaknesses (and, inevitably, biases) of my own views. It continues to help me become a better reader and reviewer.

So, please have a look and give it a thought. Please support the writers, publishers, readers and reviewers of great Australian speculative fiction.
