What a luxury to be able to watch movies two nights in a row. This time I watched The Unholy (2021), which is based on the 1983 horror novel Shrine by English author James Herbert. It is one of those books I have been trying to track down. It reminds me of American author John Sandford’s Holy Ghost (2018), which also features the supposed appearance of the Virgin Mary in a small American town.
Our local library only has four of Herbert’s print and digital books, and I feel The Ghosts of Sleath (1994) will be a good start. Although I have learned from past experience that I cannot read all the books I have borrowed and wanted to read, there is always hope. And I have found that genre novels are much more attractive and easier to read for me, especially in contrast to literary fiction.
The term “genre junky” came to mind, which led me to the website Genre Junkies (@thegenrejunkie, https://www.genrejunkies.com/), which is awesome. The reviewers have this statement: “We firmly believe that every book deserves to be read by the ones who will enjoy it, and that you are never wrong for loving it.” More importantly:
“We also know that there are very real human beings behind the works that we discuss that put true care into their craft. Any review, by anyone, can have a quantifiable effect on the success of someone’s personal hard work. We want to promote a positive, accepting atmosphere where everyone feels like they are valued.”
Well said. I particularly love the metrics they use to review books, a special and specific rating system aiming to “get books into the right hands”. This is a website “celebrating horror, sci-fi and fantasy literature” that I would definitely recommend.
