Reading vs Cooking (“Warm Winter Read” Day 38)

My esteemed associate Alexandra Pierce is the publisher of the highly regarded Speculative Insight (@speculativeinsight), an award-winning journal of “space, magic and footnotes” that focuses on non-fiction commentary on global science fiction and fantasy. In a recent newsletter, Alex shared the following words:

“Did you know that one great thing about an e-reader is that as long as you can prop it up somewhere, you can easily read while cooking? Which is useful when you don’t want to stop reading just because food must be made.”

Definitely a great tip, as I, too, have faced the problem countless times. I read ebooks on my mobile phone while also using it as a timer for cooking, so the phone is always nearby and repeatedly picked up and laid aside in the process of preparing a meal.

Problem is, I often have to slice and dice many ingredients into tiny pieces, and would risk chopping my fingers off if I were to try reading at the same time. Finding a proper place to prop up the phone is also an issue, as it may be damaged by the steam or splattered oil and/or sauce generated in the cooking process.

I suppose this is why many people listen to audiobooks, which is a great option. In my case, however, I am likely to concentrate on the listening so much that I  completely forget about the cooking.

So, the solution (for me at least)? Just delay the cooking and eating until absolutely necessary, then do it as quickly as possible so I can get back to proper reading.
