Picked up a preloved book from the local library, and found a birthday card in it. It was written by a pair of grandparents to their grandson, wishing him a very happy birthday and pleasant reading. The book itself is Killing Floor (1997), the first book in Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series.
I have never read any title from the Jack Reacher series, but a local writer I know, who is a fan, used to complain that Tom Cruise was too handsome for the character in the film adaptation!
In this particular case, what gets me is the birthday card. I wonder who the grandparents and the grandson are, and whether they are happy.
Please, if you decide to part with a book, ensure you don’t leave any personal memorabilia in it. Not just because the future readers will wonder about your life, but you will be leaving some precious memories behind.
(Alternatively, leave your personal stuff in the book when you part with it, to add to the providence of the book, and to give a new reader a new story.)
