My friend Megan’s guest essay is published via my column today, originally titled “Reading China”. Megan shares her experiences and insights into reading books about China. From Pearl S Buck and Han Suyin to Xinran and Jung Chang, to Anchee Min and Amy Tan, then to Lisa See and Guy Gavriel Kay, and finally to Linda Javin. These are well known authors and their books are worth exploring for anyone who is interested in the Middle Kingdom.
Megan and I met in 2024 for the Anne Frank exhibition at Belgrave Library. She is well travelled and passionate about reading and writing. I still have a copy of Lisa See’s Lady Tan’s Circle of Women (2023) from her. Better read it soon.
