Pretty excited to see the forthcoming publication of the English edition of Taiwanese author Huang Chong-Kai’s The Formosa Exchange (2021). The winner of the 2021 Taiwan Literature Award is translated by renowned translator Jeremy Tiang and will be published by Honford Star in September this year. The speculative literary fiction imagines what happens when the entire population of Taiwan suddenly switches places with the residents of Cuba. Daunting stuff! Interestingly, while researching this book, also discovered Tiang’s debut novel State of Emergency (2017). The winner of the Singapore Literature Prize 2018 is described as “a compelling, important piece of work from one of Singapore’s finest living authors” by The Strait Times. Couldn’t find it in my local library, so made a suggestion for purchase. Fingers and toes crossed! See below, how different the book’s past and present covers are. (Sorry about the ads… 😦 )
